Craig Dunain Hill Race – 21/03/2015

Today, in gorgeous weather, Inverness Harriers hosted this race with possibly a record turn out of runners.  The race started near Queen’s Park Athletic Stadium followed the Great Glen Way then wound through some new housing developments before meandering gradually up to the summit of Craig Dunain.

There was a mixture of terrain; tarmac, gravel, grass and woodland tracks.  The route was fairly undulating until the last pull up to the AmandaColinsummit which was challenging to me and was certainly a walk by that stage.  The return path from the summit was fast going after an initial couple of fallen trees you had to navigate round.

At the start of the race my main worry was getting lost, however, this was an extremely well marked course and you could always see a pole or red and white tape in front of you to keep you right.  There were also an abundance of friendly marshalls and photographers encouraging you on, some offering water and Jelly Babies.  Nevertheless my fear of getting lost unfortunately came true towards the finish when a lapse in concentration sent me in the wrong direction.  Luckily 3 men who were doing an after race cool down sent me in the right direction which meant I did an unnecessary loop and an extra .8 of a mile!  Despite this error I would rate this as one of my favourite races this year with gorgeous views and great running on forest tracks which I love.

Post race refreshments were at Queen’s Park and there was a fine spread including delicious cheese pasty things. It was a well organised, friendly race and one I would certainly do again.
