Fishwives Walk 21/09/2014

This has been organised for charity and people can either walk or run the route.  The money raised goes to the following charities:

Macmillan Cancer Support, Prostate Cancer UK, Keith Cancer Link and other local charities.

THE ROUTE

MapThis walk commemorates the fishwives who travelled to Keith, carrying baskets of fish. The women could be travelling over 20 miles per day and fully loaded their baskets would weigh 40lb. Mary Jane Milne, the last creel woman, starting at the age of 13 or 14 worked until the mid 1950s, retiring at the age of 73.

5 Moray Road Runners decided to enter this run, as it is not a race it was nice to go for a long run of just over 11 miles on varying terrain.  The MRRs who ran were:  Sally Bruce, Helen Low, Karen Norvell, Robert Bruce and missing from the picture Sarah Houston.  It turned out that I was the only male running of all the runners and therefore was first male finished.  The route was a really good one to run as it had pretty much everything.  It started on tarmac, went off road to trail, some places boggy, went through woodland, there were some farm tracks and at one point we had to run up a field, there was also a 7 mile steady incline with a few small steep hills.

Everyone enjoyed the run and would do it again,  It is a run that would be good if you are looking for a long run on varied surfaces.  There was coffee and food at the end in Buckie, with plenty of chocolate, etc.  They had organised a minibus to transport everyone that required it back to Newmill to their car.
