Two successful weekends for Dionne

Two successful weekends for Dionne

National Age Group Championships – Aberdeen – 17th & 18th August

I competed in the U18 women’s discus on Saturday and won with a throw of 35.95m, despite being held in the call room and starting 40 minutes late and most of the spectators having left by the time our competition finished. My winning throw was over 7m further than second place. I returned on the Sunday to compete in the U20 women’s discus, where once again I won with a slightly better, but still not great, throw of 36.91m, thus claiming a double national title for the second consecutive year. Last year I won double gold in the U16s and U18s so I stepped up a level this year. Hopefully I can claim another double next year!

Scottish National Senior Championships – Scotstoun – 11th August

It was a totally different experience at these Champs. as they used the same procedures that would be enforced in the Commonwealth Games next year – having to go through 2 call rooms and get led out into the arena to stand in front of the crowd to have your name announced was quite scary! Although it was a bit blustery, I managed to claim 4th place with 40.17m. The winner was Kirsty Law, who is UK senior number 2 and Scottish number 1. 2nd and 3rd place went to people from England and Ireland, both far more experienced and older than myself so I was happy I placed 2nd Scottish athlete. I learned a great deal from the different environment and atmosphere and felt I gained a lot! This competition followed going to the Celtic Games for the third year running and hopefully next year I can get my 4th – and maximum – selection, to once again compete for Scotland.

Well done Dionne, and thank you for your report.
