NEWS

National Cross Country – Falkirk 22/02/2014

On Saturday 8 MRR’s travelled to Falkirk to take part in the Scottish Cross Country Championships. The whole event was superbly organised. it was great to see so many North District runners with their colourful banners claiming one of the hills (though it was the probably the coldest and most windy spot in Falkirk), which added to the great atmosphere of the day. The course was very well marked and marshalled, with very enthusiastic crowds cheering everyone all the way round the very muddy course. I think all the north runners acquitted themselves superbly with some great performances. Cameron Main was our first runner of the day with a brilliant run, coming in16th(out of 136 runners) in a time of 14 min 27sec(less than 1 min for the winner) in the under 15 boys. Next was Sophia Green in the under 15 girls.(despite falling at the start, finding herself in almost last place, went on to battle through the field to claim 32nd place out of 107 runners) in a time of 17 mins 31 seconds. The mens team claimed very respectable 18th place out of 40 teams. First for the MRR men, Gareth Jenkins was 59th in 44 min 06 secs, Kenny Wilson was 61st in 44 min 09 secs. Paul Taylor was 193rd in 48 min 18 secs, Colin Green was 196th in 48 min 23 secs, John-Paul Downey was 364th in 53 min 15 secs and Keith McArthur was 374th in 53 min 35 secs. 566 men completed the course. Hopefully next year will see even more MRR’s and our friends from the other North District clubs going to this great event.

Forres Cross Country 15 February 2014

The curtain came down on the North District Cross Country League as Forres played host to the final fixture of the season. The mixture of hills, leaves, tight turns and mud provided the usual test of endurance around the Grant Park course and this year was no exception despite the pleasant weather. In the junior races there was a good turnout of yellow vests in the U11 races with Niamh Whelan, Alice Craig, Grace Jenkins, Megan McKay, Harriet Whelan and Niamh Grant all bringing the season to a close with good runs. Blair Milne had a real battle in his race to dead heat for 2nd place and take 2nd place overall in the league, Brother, Joshua Milne also sprinted hard to claim 4th place on the line. Well done also to Alex Paterson on his 1st race for the Club. In the U13 categories Grace Whelan claimed her 3rd victory of the season and with it a share of the League title – well done Grace. Cara Nally and Beth Grant also ran well and can now look forward to the track season. Morgan Lewis proved his consistency once again when finishing 6th in his race to cap off a good season with Tomas Coelho running well also. In the U15 Boys race Cameron Main secured the overall runners up spot with another strong run to finish 2nd, his 3rd consecutive 2nd place of the season and Sam Anderson completed his season and can also now look forward to the Petrofac Athletics League .

In the senior races, Gareth Jenkins (7th) took 1st Vet 40 in the league with Kenny Wilson (12th), Paul Taylor (16th), Colin Green (20th), John-Paul Downey (33rd) and Keith Macarthur (37th) also taking part as they all prepare for the National Champs in Falkirk on 22nd Feb – good luck guys. The Ladies team were led home by Karen Norvell (14th) with Sarah Houston (18th), Amanda Strang (27th) and Jenni Coelho (33rd) bringing their X-Country season to a close. As always, a huge thank you to Forres Harriers for their organisation and excellent hospitality and, finally, to the league organisers on what has been a fantastic season throughout.

Inverness Cross Country 18th January 2014

Dores was the stunning new venue for the Inverness fixture in this season’s North District X – Country League. The undulating course provided a real challenge for the runners and there were some notable performances from our junior members in particular. Blair Milne (U11) battled hard to finish 2nd in his race a mere 6 seconds behind the winner and Grace Whelan (U13) also finished 2nd which leaves things finely poised in her age group with only 2 races remaining. Following on from his fine run in last weekend’s inter district champs, Cameron Main (U15) ran strongly to finish a clear 2nd in his first league outing of the season. Performance of the day though went to Sophia Green (U15). Better known for her swimming prowess, Sophia used her endurance to great effect to claim an outstanding victory in her debut race for the Club. Well done to all our other juniors for ensuring another good show of yellow vests.
There was real quality in the senior races and our men competed well to consolidate their 3rd place in the league with Gareth Jenkins and Kenny Wilson leading the team home, ably supported by Paul Taylor and Colin Green. In the Ladies Race, Michelle Green, Karen Norvell and Irina Thompson were our scorers on the day. Well done to all those who made the journey through and a big thank you to Inverness Harriers for an excellent event. The next fixture is Saturday 25th January at Edderton.

Well done everyone. I think this must be a record turnout of juniors and seniors making the long journey north and the good day’s competition was marred by a mishap with one of the mini buses on the way home. I hope everyone has recovered from this.

Thank you to Caithness AAC for their hospitality.
