Team Yella on Tour

Having had a successful ‘overseas’ trip to Orkney for the marathon in 2016 there was much talk in the club about doing another MRR Road Trip … so (including husbands & wives) 15 of us embarked on a weekend break to Amsterdam to take in the sights and run the TCS Amsterdam Marathon … due to injury, Justine deferred to the 8km and Steven had to pull out of the marathon at the last minute … the rest of the runners were :

Andy Alexander : 3:03:16 (PB)

Karen Norvell : 4:03:01

Sally Bruce : 4:07:36

Robert Bruce : 4:09:50

Kirsteen Carmichael : 4:11:11

Michelle Russell : 4:29:30 (PB)

Debbie Barron : 4:57:34

Justine Blaszk : 35:21

The Amsterdam Marathon is known for its fast and beautiful course with the start and finish taking place in the historical Olympic Stadium. The support within the stadium and throughout the course is really great, the Dutch are a wonderful friendly people and you are made to feel very welcome from the off. The Marathon course follows a part of the Olympic route along the Amstel River, past stately homes and a few windmills with some beautiful rural scenery and past some of Amsterdam’s busiest tourist spots, including Vondelpark (twice!) and the heart of the Rijksmuseum. The course is flat and fast … with the potential for a PB, if you can find a space to get up to pace! It is a busy marathon and my only complaint about the whole event is the congestion at the start & finish … but we coped!

It was a perfect day for us all, with optimum running conditions and, despite the congestion & confusion at the start, we did manage to merge together at various points and there was some good representation from Team Yella throughout the pack 🙂

Personally, I had trained since Edinburgh to a Heart Rate based plan and on the day it came together beautifully for me, my plan to run steadily at the start and then pick up the pace shows in my splits, and my10km times were consistent throughout … I did come in slightly in front of the 4 hour pacers, but they started well in front of me and I understand that they were not spot on their target … overall I was delighted and I think the rest of the team were too.

It was a brilliant weekend away and a lovely marathon to do … now, who’s organising next year’s trip?!
